How it works
What is wall-mounted air conditioning?
Wall-mounted air conditioning is a split system: a slim indoor unit fixed high on a wall, joined by refrigerant pipes to an outdoor unit outside. Aircova fits these single room systems from £2,195 with VAT. Each one cools in summer, heats in winter and is usually fitted in a day.
The indoor unit holds a fan and a coil. The outdoor unit, often called the condenser, holds the compressor, which is the noisy part. Keeping that part outside is why split air conditioning is so much quieter than a portable box on the floor.
Two insulated copper pipes carry R32 refrigerant between the units. A power cable and a small condensate drain run alongside them, through one 65mm hole in the wall. Water from the indoor coil drains away by itself, so there is no tank to empty.
Every unit we fit is an inverter model. An inverter compressor speeds up and slows down to hold your set temperature, rather than switching hard on and off. That keeps the room steady and the running cost down.
Where the indoor unit goes
We fix the indoor unit high on a wall, ideally an outside wall, with at least 15cm of space above it. Cool air falls, so a high position spreads it across the whole room. We keep the airflow away from beds, sofas and desks, so nobody sits in a draught.
Where the outdoor unit goes
The outdoor unit needs open air around it and a solid base. Most go on a wall bracket or a ground stand at the back or side of the house. In London terraces we often use the side return, and in flats a balcony floor works well.
The included price covers up to 3 metres of pipe, so the closer the two units are, the simpler the job. Longer pipe runs, scaffolding or tower access, internal wall chasing and consumer unit upgrades are priced at the survey and shown in writing.

2.5kW vs 3.5kW? If the room is under about 20m² and does not face south, 2.5kW is normally enough. Pick 3.5kW for a loft, a lounge or a room with large windows. Our BTU calculator gives a size from your room in a minute.
UK prices for single room air conditioning run from about £1,500 to £3,200 fitted, with London at the top end. Our air conditioning price guide shows what changes the figure, from brand to pipe length.
Fitting day
Split AC installation day, step by step
A wall-mounted air conditioner installation usually takes one working day, often 5 to 7 hours. Two fitters arrive in the morning, and the system is running before they leave. This is the order we work in.
- Protect the room. We lay dust sheets, move furniture and agree the exact unit positions with you.
- Fix the bracket. The indoor mounting plate goes on level, so the condensate drain falls the right way.
- Core drill the wall. One 65mm hole is drilled with dust extraction, angled slightly down to the outside.
- Mount the outdoor unit. It goes on a wall bracket or ground stand with anti-vibration feet.
- Run the pipework. Copper pipes, cable and drain are joined and dressed in neat white trunking.
- Pressure test and vacuum. We test the joints with nitrogen, then pull a deep vacuum to remove air and moisture.
- Commission and hand over. We release the R32, test cooling and heating, and show you the controls.
The pressure test and vacuum steps matter more than anything you can see. Skipping them is the most common cause of leaks and early failure. You get a written commissioning record, and we register the warranty in your name.
The law sets a minimum standard too. Anyone who installs or services equipment holding refrigerant needs an F gas qualification and company certification, as the GOV.UK F gas guidance sets out. That is why split system air conditioner installation is never a DIY job.
Most homes in England do not need planning permission for one small outdoor unit, if it does not change how the building looks in a big way. The government’s air conditioning rules note still says to check with your council. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas often need consent, and our planning permission guide covers each case.

All year comfort
Do wall-mounted units heat, and are they quiet?
Yes to both. Every wall unit we fit is an air-to-air heat pump, so it runs in reverse in winter. It takes warmth from the outside air and moves it into the room, even on frosty days.
That heating ratio is why a wall unit costs far less to run than a plug-in or panel heater. A panel heater turns one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. A heat pump turns it into three or four, so it can replace electric heaters in the rooms it serves.
On noise, the indoor unit is the part you hear. Some models, such as the Daikin Perfera and Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN, run from about 19dB in quiet mode, which is close to a whisper. Most units we fit are rated A++ for cooling on their SEER label.
Outside, the condenser sits at roughly 45 to 50dB, about the level of a quiet conversation. In terraced streets we avoid placing it under a neighbour’s window, and we use anti-vibration mounts on every bracket.
Brands and options
Wall fitted air conditioning units we install
We fit wall fitted air conditioning units from the five brands UK installers fit most. All run on R32 refrigerant, which has a lower global warming impact than the older R410A gas.
We also fit Samsung, LG and Hitachi on request. You can compare the full Daikin range of wall-mounted heat pumps before your survey, and we will price the model you prefer.
Wall-mounted split or portable unit?
A portable unit is cheap to buy but loud, and it vents hot air through a hose in the window. A fitted split is quiet, cools faster and heats too. Read our portable vs split air conditioning guide for the full comparison.
- Compressor inside the room
- Hose through an open window
- Cooling only
- Takes up floor space
- Compressor stays outside
- Window stays shut and secure
- Cools and heats
- Off the floor, high on the wall
Labels worth reading
Two efficiency figures tell you how much a unit will cost to run. Higher is better for both, and we list them on every quote.
- SEER
- Cooling efficiency. Many wall units we fit are rated A++.
- SCOP
- Heating efficiency. Around 4 on current inverter models, which means 3 to 4 kW of heat per kW used.
- kW and BTU
- Output. 1kW is about 3,412 BTU/h, so a 3.5kW unit gives roughly 12,000 BTU/h.
Rooms we cool
Rooms it suits, servicing and warranty
A single wall unit suits the room you sleep or work in. Each room brings its own questions, so we size and place the unit to fit.

Bedrooms
A 2.5kW unit with a quiet night mode, placed so the airflow never blows across the bed.
Bedroom air conditioning
Loft rooms
Roof windows and sloped ceilings add summer heat, so lofts often need 3.5kW and a planned pipe route.
Loft air conditioning
Flats
Balcony condensers, plus the spec sheets and noise figures your freeholder will ask for.
Air conditioning in flatsCooling more than one room
If you want two to five rooms, separate wall units each need their own outdoor unit. A multi-split system runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit instead, starting from £3,995 for two rooms.
For a whole floor with nothing on the walls, ducted air conditioning hides the indoor unit in the loft or ceiling void. Both options sit alongside our wider air conditioning installation service.
Servicing and warranty
We register every unit for the manufacturer warranty, up to 5 years and longer on some ranges with yearly servicing. A yearly air conditioning service cleans the coil and filters and checks the refrigerant and drain.
Between services, rinse the indoor filters every few weeks in summer to keep airflow strong. We send a reminder when your service is due.

FAQs
Wall-mounted air conditioning FAQs
How much does it cost to fit a wall-mounted air conditioner?
A single wall-mounted unit costs £1,500 to £3,200 fitted in the UK, with London at the top end. At Aircova a 2.5kW unit starts from £2,195, 3.5kW from £2,395, 5.0kW from £2,695 and 7.0kW from £2,995, all with VAT. That covers up to 3 metres of pipe, the bracket, the electrical connection and commissioning. Longer pipe runs or scaffolding are priced at the survey.
Does a wall-mounted air conditioner need an outdoor unit?
Yes, a wall-mounted split needs an outdoor unit. The compressor and condenser sit outside, which is what keeps the room quiet. Units sold as having no outside part still need two large holes in the wall for air, and they are louder. For most homes, a small outdoor unit on a bracket, stand or balcony is the better choice.
Should I choose 2.5kW vs 3.5kW for my room?
Choose 2.5kW for most rooms up to about 20m², and 3.5kW for a lounge, loft or sunny room. Big windows, a south facing wall or a flat roof all add heat, so they push the size up. The price gap is £200 between our 2.5kW and 3.5kW units, and an undersized unit runs flat out all summer. We confirm the size at the survey.
Can I install a split air conditioner myself?
No, not legally if it involves handling refrigerant. In the UK, anyone who installs equipment holding F gas must hold an F gas qualification, and the company needs certification too. A self fit can also void the manufacturer warranty. Our split ac installation price includes the pressure test, vacuum and commissioning record that warranties ask for.
Are wall fitted air conditioning units noisy?
No, modern wall units are quiet indoors. Some models run from about 19dB in quiet mode, close to a whisper, so they suit bedrooms. The outdoor unit is louder at roughly 45 to 50dB, like a quiet conversation. We place it away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbours’, and fit anti-vibration mounts.
Can a wall-mounted unit go on an inside wall?
Yes, but an outside wall is simpler and cheaper. On an inside wall the pipes must travel further to reach the outdoor unit, which may mean trunking along a ceiling line or chasing pipes into the wall. The condensate drain may also need a small pump. We show both options and their prices at the survey.
How long does a wall-mounted air conditioner installation take?
Most installs take one working day, often 5 to 7 hours. That covers drilling the wall hole, fixing both units, running the pipework, the pressure test and vacuum, and commissioning. Jobs that need scaffolding, a long pipe run or a consumer unit upgrade can take a little longer, and we tell you this when we quote.
Will one wall unit cool more than one room?
Not well. A wall unit is sized for the room it sits in, and doors and walls stop the air reaching other rooms. For two to five rooms, a multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit, each with its own control. Our multi-split prices start from £3,995 for two rooms.
