The brand

Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning installation explained

Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning installation means fitting one of the brand’s split heat pumps: an indoor unit on your wall and an outdoor unit outside. Aircova supplies and fits these premium units from £2,395 with VAT. Each one cools in summer, heats in winter and is registered for the manufacturer warranty.

Mitsubishi Electric is a Japanese maker with a long record in heat pumps. In the UK its home air conditioning sits in the M Series, which covers wall, floor and multi-split systems. Installers tend to rate it for build quality, quiet indoor fans and steady heating in cold weather.

Every unit in the current home range is an inverter model. The compressor speeds up and slows down to hold your set temperature, instead of switching hard on and off. That keeps the room steady and the electricity use low, which matters most when you run it for heating.

Most of the range uses R32 refrigerant, which has a lower global warming impact than the older R410A gas. The newer MSZ-RZ uses R290, a natural refrigerant with a very low warming impact. We handle both, and our engineers hold the F gas qualifications the law asks for.

Indoor and outdoor pairs

Each single room system is a matched pair. An MSZ indoor unit links to an MUZ outdoor unit of the same size, such as an MSZ-LN25 with an MUZ-LN25. For two rooms or more, the indoor units connect to one MXZ outdoor unit instead. We specify the pair on your quote.

What we supply and fit

We buy the indoor and outdoor units, fix them, run the pipework and commission the system. The price covers up to 3 metres of pipe, the bracket, the electrical connection and commissioning. You deal with one company from survey to handover, and we register the warranty in your name.

Why people ask for this brand

Many of our customers already know the name from a friend’s flat or their office. Others pick it for the MSZ-LN, which comes in colours most brands do not offer. The rest want a quiet bedroom unit or strong winter heating, and Mitsubishi Electric does both well.

It is one brand within our wider air conditioning installation service, and it is not the only good choice. We say so at the survey. We also fit Daikin, Fujitsu, Toshiba and Panasonic, and we show you the price gap before you decide.

Open plan flats often suit a 3.5kW or 5.0kW wall unit placed to throw air along the length of the room.

Model guide

Which Mitsubishi Electric wall unit suits your room?

Mitsubishi Electric sells five wall unit families for UK homes. They share the same core technology, but differ in looks, sensors, controls and price. Here is what each one offers, based on the maker’s current UK product pages.

MSZ-LN

Best for living rooms and bedrooms on show

The design range, in Red, Natural White, Pearl White or Black. It has a 3D i-see sensor that reads where people are in the room, a Plasma Quad Connect filter and Wi-Fi built in. Sizes run from 1.8kW to 6.1kW.

MSZ-RZ

Best for heating first homes

The newest model, running on R290. Mitsubishi Electric quotes a SCOP of up to 5.3, an A+++ heating rating, and SEER up to 11.7. It holds strong heating output in low outdoor temperatures. Sizes are 2.5kW and 3.5kW.

MSZ-EF Zen

Best for modern interiors

A flat, styled front panel in Black, White or Silver that is easy to wipe clean. Wi-Fi is built in, it works with Alexa, and it is Plasma Quad Connect compatible. Sizes run from 1.8kW to 5.0kW.

MSZ-AY and MSZ-AP

Best all round choice

A clean white unit with double vanes that spread air evenly. Current VGK models have Wi-Fi built in and work with Alexa. With sizes from 1.5kW to 7.1kW, there is a model for almost any room.

MSZ-HR Classic

Best for a tighter budget

A compact flat panel unit. Mitsubishi Electric says the equipment costs about 20% less than the matching MSZ-AP. Wi-Fi is an optional add on. Sizes run from 2.5kW to 7.1kW.

Which size? A bedroom up to about 20m² usually needs 2.5kW, a lounge or sunny room 3.5kW and an open plan space 5.0kW or more. Our BTU calculator gives a starting size in a minute, and the survey confirms it.

The MSZ-LN and MSZ-RZ cost more than the AY or HR at the same size, because the equipment price is higher. We show the exact figure for the model you choose on the written quote. Pipe runs over 3 metres, scaffolding or tower access, consumer unit upgrades and internal wall chasing are priced at the survey.

For context, UK prices for a single fitted room run from about £1,500 to £3,200, with London at the top end. Mitsubishi Electric usually lands in the upper half of that band. Our air conditioning cost guide explains what moves the price, from brand to pipe length.

Is the premium price worth it?

For a bedroom you use every night, often yes. The extra cost buys lower indoor noise on the LN and RZ, a 3D i-see sensor and design choices that suit a room on show. Spread over the life of the unit, the gap is small.

For a spare room or a home office used a few weeks a year, a standard tier unit may make more sense. We are happy to quote both, and the survey visit is free either way.

Everyday use

Quiet running, winter heating and the MELCloud Home app

Three things decide how much you enjoy a unit after the fitters leave: how loud it is, how well it heats and how easy it is to control. Mitsubishi Electric scores well on all three.

19dBquiet mode on the MSZ-LN and MSZ-RZ indoor units
5.3SCOP quoted for the MSZ-RZ, rated A+++ for heating
45 to 50dBtypical sound level of an outdoor unit

Noise

Nineteen decibels is close to a whisper, which is why the LN and RZ are popular for bedrooms. Outdoor units sit at roughly 45 to 50dB, about a quiet conversation. We fit anti-vibration mounts and keep the condenser away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbours’. Our quietest air conditioning units guide compares figures across brands.

Heating

Every model on this page is an air-to-air heat pump. Modern inverter units give about 3 to 4 kW of heat for every kW of electricity, against one for one from a panel heater. That is why many customers use them as their main heat in a room during spring and autumn.

Control

MELCloud Home is Mitsubishi Electric’s current app, and it replaces the older MELCloud app. It lets you set modes, temperatures and weekly schedules from your phone, view energy use and share access with family. It also works with Amazon Alexa.

The LN, EF Zen, RZ and current AY and AP models have Wi-Fi built in. The HR needs an optional Wi-Fi interface. We set up the app with you at handover, so you leave with it working.

Rooms and buyers

Multi-split systems and who Mitsubishi Electric suits

For two rooms or more, Mitsubishi Electric uses the MXZ outdoor unit. The maker says one R32 MXZ can run up to six indoor units, and you can mix wall, floor, cassette and ducted types. In most homes we connect two to five rooms.

Each room keeps its own controller and temperature. One outdoor unit also means one bracket on the wall instead of several, which matters in a terraced street or on a small balcony. A mix is common too, such as an LN in the lounge and AY units in the bedrooms.

Sizing matters more on a multi-split than on a single unit. The outdoor unit has a total capacity, and the indoor units have to fit within it. We work out each room first, then pick the MXZ size that covers them, so no room is left short in a heatwave.

Adding rooms later

You can plan for another room now and fit it later, as long as the outdoor unit has a spare port and enough capacity. Tell us at the survey and we size the MXZ with room to grow. Our multi-split air conditioning page explains how these systems work for any brand.

A plain lounge wall above a sofa is a common spot for an indoor unit, with the airflow set to pass over heads, not across them.

Who it suits

  • Bedrooms where low night noise matters most
  • Homes that want heating as well as cooling
  • Rooms where the unit is on show, thanks to the LN colours
  • Flats where one outdoor unit has to serve several rooms
  • Owners who want app control and Alexa from day one

If you are in a flat, the freeholder may ask for spec sheets and noise figures, which we supply. Our page on air conditioning for flats covers that process.

How it compares

A fair, short comparison with the two other brands we fit most. All three are good, so the choice often comes down to looks, budget and the model’s features.

Fitting and cover

Mitsubishi air conditioner installation and warranty

A single Mitsubishi air conditioner installation usually takes one working day, often 5 to 7 hours. A two or three room multi-split takes two to three days. This is the order we work in.

  1. Survey. We measure the room, check the wall and agree where both units go.
  2. Written price. You get a fixed quote naming the exact model, size and any extras.
  3. Fix the units. The indoor plate goes on level and the outdoor unit on a bracket or stand.
  4. Run the pipework. Copper pipes, cable and condensate drain pass through one 65mm hole.
  5. Test and vacuum. We pressure test with nitrogen, then pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture.
  6. Commission. We release the refrigerant and check cooling, heating and airflow at the vents.
  7. Hand over. We set up MELCloud Home, explain the controls and register the warranty.

The pressure test and vacuum matter more than anything you can see. Skipping them is a common cause of leaks and early failure. You get a written commissioning record, which the manufacturer may ask for if you ever make a claim.

By law, anyone who installs equipment holding refrigerant needs an F gas qualification and company certification. The GOV.UK F gas guidance sets this out. It is why a split heat pump is never a DIY job, even when the unit is sold online.

Warranty

We register the manufacturer warranty for every Mitsubishi Electric unit we fit. Standard cover for most brands runs up to 5 years. Longer terms set by Mitsubishi Electric may need an accredited installer, so we confirm what applies to your model at the survey.

A yearly air conditioning service keeps the coil, filters and drain clean, and many warranties expect it. Between visits, rinse the indoor filters every few weeks in summer.

Planning and placement

Most houses in England do not need planning permission for one small outdoor unit, if it does not change how the building looks in a big way. The government note on air conditioning rules confirms this. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas often need consent, so check with your council. Our planning permission guide covers each case.

FAQs

Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning FAQs

How much does it cost to install Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning?

A fitted Mitsubishi Electric wall unit from Aircova costs from £2,395 for 2.5kW and from £2,595 for 3.5kW, with VAT. A two room multi-split starts from £4,395. Those prices cover up to 3 metres of pipe, the bracket, the electrical connection and commissioning. Design models such as the MSZ-LN cost more, and we show the exact figure on your written quote.

Which Mitsubishi Electric unit is the quietest?

The MSZ-LN and MSZ-RZ are the quietest, running from about 19dB in quiet mode. That is close to a whisper, so both suit bedrooms and nurseries. The outdoor unit is louder at roughly 45 to 50dB, so where it goes matters too. We place it away from bedroom windows and fit anti-vibration mounts.

What is the difference between the MSZ-LN and MSZ-AY?

The MSZ-LN is the design model and the MSZ-AY is the everyday white unit. The LN comes in four colours, has a 3D i-see sensor that tracks where people sit, and uses a Plasma Quad Connect filter. The AY has double vanes, Wi-Fi built in on current models and a wider size range. The AY costs less at the same size.

Is Mitsubishi Electric better than Daikin?

Neither is better for every home, and both make reliable, quiet heat pumps. Mitsubishi Electric offers the LN colours and the R290 RZ model. Daikin offers ranges such as the Perfera and Emura. Both sit in our premium price tier. We often quote one model from each, so you can compare looks, features and price side by side.

How long is the warranty on a Mitsubishi Electric unit?

The warranty length depends on the model and on Mitsubishi Electric’s current terms. We register the manufacturer warranty for every unit we fit, and cover across the brands we install runs up to 5 years. Longer terms set by Mitsubishi Electric may need an accredited installer and yearly servicing, so we confirm exactly what applies at the survey.

Can Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning heat my home in winter?

Yes, every current Mitsubishi Electric home wall unit is a heat pump that heats as well as cools. Inverter models give about 3 to 4 kW of heat for each kW of electricity. The MSZ-RZ is built for strong heating in cold weather, with a quoted SCOP of up to 5.3. A unit heats the room it is in, not radiators or hot water.

Does the MELCloud Home app work with every model?

MELCloud Home works with any Mitsubishi Electric unit that has Wi-Fi. The LN, EF Zen, RZ and current AY and AP models have Wi-Fi built in. The HR Classic needs an optional Wi-Fi interface, which we can add. The app covers modes, schedules, energy use and Alexa voice control, and we set it up with you at handover.

Do I need an accredited installer for Mitsubishi Electric?

You need an F gas qualified installer by law, and every Aircova engineer holds that qualification. Any F gas certified company can fit and commission a Mitsubishi Electric unit, and the standard manufacturer warranty still applies. Some longer warranty terms set by Mitsubishi Electric may need an accredited installer. We check the current terms for your model and confirm them at the survey.

Can I add another room to my Mitsubishi Electric system later?

Yes, if the MXZ outdoor unit has a spare port and enough capacity. Mitsubishi Electric’s R32 MXZ can run up to six indoor units, and in most homes we fit two to five. If you might add a room later, tell us at the survey. We then size the outdoor unit with room to grow.
