The short answer

How much does an air-to-air heat pump cost?

An air-to-air heat pump costs from £2,195 fitted for one room and from £3,995 for two rooms, including VAT. Larger homes with three to five rooms run from £5,495 to £8,495. Aircova fixes the price in writing after a survey, and eligible homes can take £2,500 off through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Those are our own fixed prices, not a range we stretch later. They cover the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, up to 3 metres of pipe per room, the wall bracket, the electrical connection and commissioning.

Across the wider market, the typical air-to-air heat pump price in the UK is £1,500 to £3,200 for a single room, fitted. London prices sit at the top of that band, because parking, access and labour cost more in the capital. Our single room price lands in the middle.

Why the price is the same as air conditioning

An air-to-air heat pump is a split system that heats as well as cools. The kit is the same as a modern air conditioner, with a reversing valve that sends heat indoors in winter. So the price of the hardware and the fitting is the same too.

The difference is what you ask it to do. When heating is the main job, we size each indoor unit for a cold January day, not a hot July one. That can move a room from a 2.5kW unit to a 3.5kW unit, which changes the price by about £200.

If you want to know how the system works before you look at numbers, our guide to air-to-air heat pumps covers SCOP, winter performance and the difference from radiator systems.

What the price buys you

You get room heating that gives about 3 to 4 kW of heat for every kW of electricity, plus cooling in summer. Every unit we fit is an inverter model on R32 refrigerant. Many carry an A++ cooling label.

Cost per room on a multi-split

The more rooms you add, the less each one costs. Two rooms work out at about £2,000 per room. At five rooms, the cost per room drops to about £1,700.

That happens because the rooms share one outdoor unit, one electrical supply and one commissioning visit. You also keep the outside of your home tidier, with one condenser instead of several.

A single split for each room can still make sense where rooms sit on opposite sides of a house. Long pipe runs to one shared outdoor unit can cost more than a second small one. Our page on multi-split air conditioning explains how many indoor units one outdoor unit can carry.

Ducted systems

A ducted unit serving two to three rooms starts from £6,995. Larger whole-floor ducted systems typically cost £8,000 to £12,000 after a survey.

The indoor unit hides in the loft or a ceiling void, and warm air comes through slim grilles. It needs about 25 to 30cm of space, so it suits renovations, new builds and loft conversions best. See when a ducted system is worth the extra cost.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Price after the £2,500 grant

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme run by Ofgem gives £2,500 off the cost of an air-to-air heat pump in England and Wales. It is taken off your quote, so you do not pay the full amount and claim it back.

£1,495two rooms after the grant, if eligible
£2,995three rooms after the grant, if eligible
£5,995five rooms after the grant, if eligible

Four rooms would come to £4,495, and a two to three room ducted system also to £4,495, after the grant. These figures use our from prices. Your written quote shows the exact deduction.

The grant cannot make a system free. On a single room, the deduction depends on the final quote and the scheme rules. So we do not publish an after-grant figure for one room.

Grant rules are changing fast, and we confirm eligibility at the survey. The full rules, and who can apply, are on our heat pump grant page.

Price drivers

What changes your air-to-air heat pump installation cost

Six things move the price up or down. We check each one at the survey and put the result in your written quote, so there are no surprise extras on the day.

kW size of each unit

Bigger rooms need more heat output. A bedroom up to about 20m² usually takes a 2.5kW unit, a lounge 3.5kW and an open plan space 5kW or more. Each step up adds about £200 to £300.

2.5kW
About 8,500 BTU/h. From £2,195.
3.5kW
About 12,000 BTU/h. From £2,395.
5.0kW
About 17,000 BTU/h. From £2,695.
7.0kW
About 24,000 BTU/h. From £2,995.

Number of rooms

Each extra room adds an indoor unit, its pipe run and a day or part of a day of labour. A multi-split outdoor unit usually carries two to five indoor units.

One room
  • From £2,195
  • One day
  • One outdoor unit
Five rooms
  • From £8,495
  • About £1,700 per room
  • Still one outdoor unit

Brand and model range

We fit Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Toshiba and Panasonic, with Samsung, LG and Hitachi on request. Our from prices use a quality mid-range model from one of the main brands.

Premium design ranges cost more. Quiet bedroom models such as the Daikin Perfera or the Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN run from about 19dB in quiet mode, and they carry a higher price than the base range. We show you both on the quote.

Pipe runs

Each indoor unit includes up to 3 metres of pipe. Longer runs need more copper, insulation and trunking, plus more refrigerant charge. This is the most common extra, and we price it per metre at the survey.

Access

An outdoor unit on a ground stand or a low wall bracket needs no special access. A bracket high on a three storey terrace, or on a roof, may need a tower or scaffold, which is priced separately.

Electrics

Every system needs its own supply from the consumer unit. Older fuse boards with no spare way, or no RCD protection, may need an upgrade before we connect. Internal wall chasing, where you want cables hidden in plaster, is also extra.

Small bedroom that suits a 2.5kW unit
A small bedroom like this usually takes a 2.5kW unit, the lowest price point on our list.

Check your room size first. Our BTU calculator gives a first guide to the kW size each room needs. 1kW is about 3,412 BTU/h.

Typical set-ups and what they cost

These three examples show how the air-to-air heat pump installation cost builds up in homes we see often in London and the South East. They use our from prices, not real customer quotes, and the survey sets the final figure.

Flat on panel heaters, two rooms

A two bedroom flat with panel heaters in the lounge and main bedroom. A 3.5kW unit goes in the lounge and a 2.5kW unit in the bedroom, both on one outdoor unit on the balcony. That starts from £3,995. If the home is eligible for the grant, the price drops to £1,495. Freeholder consent comes first, and fitting takes about two days.

Victorian terrace, one room

A back bedroom of about 14m² that is cold in winter and stuffy in summer. A 2.5kW wall-mounted unit, with the outdoor unit on a bracket over the side return, starts from £2,195. Solid brick walls take longer to core drill. The pipe run is short, though, so the job is usually done in one day with no extras.

Semi on storage heaters, four rooms

A house with old storage heaters in the lounge, kitchen diner and two bedrooms. A four room multi-split starts from £6,995, or £4,495 after the grant if eligible. The outdoor unit sits on a ground stand at the back. An older fuse board may need an upgrade, which we would price in writing before you book.

Upfront cost compared

Upfront cost compared with other home heating

If you are replacing storage heaters, panel heaters or a boiler, the fitted price is only part of the picture. The table shows typical market ranges for the upfront cost of each option, so you can compare like with like.

Electric panel heatersTypically £150 to £500 per heaterNoNo
Air-to-water heat pumpTypically £8,000 to £16,500 before any grantYes, with a cylinderNot on most systems

Storage and panel heaters

Electric heaters are cheaper to buy. A full set of new storage heaters can cost about the same as a two or three room heat pump. Panel heaters cost less again.

The catch is efficiency. Storage and panel heaters turn 1 kW of electricity into 1 kW of heat. An air-to-air heat pump gives about 3 to 4 kW of heat for the same 1 kW, and it cools in summer too.

Many London flats run on electric heating with no gas supply. There, a wall unit in each main room often replaces the heaters. The outdoor unit sits on a balcony, with freeholder consent. Our page on air conditioning for flats covers the consent steps.

Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water system heats radiators and a hot water cylinder, and it replaces a boiler completely. That is a bigger job, often with new radiators, so the upfront cost is much higher.

An air-to-air system heats the rooms that have an indoor unit, and it does not make hot water. Some homes keep a boiler for hot water and showers, which rules out the grant. The Energy Saving Trust guide to air-to-air heat pumps sets out the pros and cons of both types.

What about running costs?

What you pay each year depends on your tariff, your insulation and how many hours you heat. We keep the full figures, with worked examples against storage heaters, in our guide to air conditioning running costs.

You can get an instant quote online in a couple of minutes. For cooling-only installs, our air conditioning cost guide sets out prices by system and brand.

Standards behind the price

All our engineers hold an F gas qualification, which the law requires for anyone fitting a system that holds refrigerant. To claim the grant, the work must also go through an installer certified by MCS, which now lists air-to-air heat pumps as a newly added technology.

Manufacturer warranties run up to 5 years, and longer on some ranges with a yearly service. An autumn air conditioning service keeps the cover valid and the unit ready for winter.

The same team handles cooling installs too, as part of our wider air conditioning installation service across London and the South East.

FAQs

Heat pump cost questions

How much is an air-to-air heat pump in the UK?

The typical air-to-air heat pump price in the UK is £1,500 to £3,200 for one room, fitted, with London at the top end. Our prices start at £2,195 for a 2.5kW single room system and £3,995 for two rooms, both including VAT. Three to five rooms on a multi-split run from £5,495 to £8,495.

Is an air-to-air heat pump cheaper than an air source heat pump?

Yes, the upfront price is usually much lower. An air-to-water system that heats radiators and hot water typically costs £8,000 to £16,500 before any grant. An air-to-air system that heats two rooms starts from £3,995 with us. The trade-off is that air-to-air does not heat your hot water, so most homes keep another way to do that.

How much does it cost to heat a whole house with air-to-air?

For most flats and small houses, expect £6,995 to £8,495 for four to five indoor units on one outdoor unit. That covers the living areas and bedrooms. Bathrooms and hallways are usually left out, so they need a towel rail or small heater. Larger houses may need two outdoor units, which we price after the survey.

Can I get the £2,500 grant on a single room system?

It depends on your home and the current scheme rules, so we confirm it at the survey. The grant cannot make a system free, and the deduction can never be more than the cost of the work. For multi-room systems, the full £2,500 comes off the quote for eligible homes, which takes two rooms from £3,995 to £1,495.

Are there extra costs on top of the fixed price?

Only if your home needs work outside a standard install, and we tell you before you book. The usual extras are pipe runs over 3 metres per room, scaffold or tower access, a consumer unit upgrade and wall chasing. Each one is priced in writing at the survey, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.

Does a bigger kW unit cost much more?

No, each size step adds about £200 to £300. A 2.5kW unit starts from £2,195, a 3.5kW from £2,395, a 5.0kW from £2,695 and a 7.0kW from £2,995. The right size matters more than the price gap. An undersized unit struggles to heat a room on the coldest days.

Is an air-to-air heat pump the same price as air conditioning?

Yes, for the same system the price is the same. A modern split air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump that can run in reverse. The difference is in sizing, as we size for winter heat loss when heating is the main job. That sometimes means a larger unit in a room, which adds a little to the cost.

How long does it take to fit, and does that change the price?

A single room usually takes one day, often 5 to 7 hours. A two or three room multi-split takes two to three days, and a ducted system three to five days. Labour is already built into our fixed prices, so the fitting time does not add to your bill unless the survey finds extra work.

Can I add more rooms later, and what does that cost?

Often yes, if the outdoor unit has spare capacity and ports for another indoor unit. If you think you will add a room later, tell us at the survey. We can choose a multi-split outdoor unit with room to grow, which costs less than swapping it out in a few years. Adding a room later is priced like any other indoor unit and pipe run.

Do you charge for the survey?

No, the home survey is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. We measure each room, look at the pipe route and outdoor unit spot, and check your consumer unit. You then get a written fixed price, with any grant deduction shown, so you can compare it with other quotes on equal terms.
